7th MRC Graduate Symposium & Awarding of the MRC Prize 2012

2012_Graduate_Symposium_Flyer
This year's MRC Graduate Symposium and the Awarding of the MRC Prize took place on June 7, 2012. More than 200 participants joined for a day filled with lively discussions and many excellent talks and posters. We congratulate the two poster prize winners, Roman Grisch (D-MATL) and Sarah Etter (D-PHYS).

The poster session was combined with the exhibition of 25 very attractive research images submitted by materials scientists from ETH Zurich and Empa. The audience was invited to vote for their favorite image, which resulted in the following ranking:

  1. Li Zhang "Artistic rendering of a scanning electron micrograph showing a mouse myoblast (C2C12) interacting with an array of microhelices via lamellipodial and filopodial interactions."
  2. Rafael Libanori "Alignment of ultra-high magnetic responsive (UHMR) alumina platelets in an epoxy matrix."
  3. Berna Oezkale "Cobalt rose in a field of polypyrrole: Cobalt-polypyrrole nanocomposite was fabricated by electrochemical methods on a gold surface."

The late afternoon was then dedicated to the awarding of the Materials Research Prize 2012. The six finalists, Matthias Fuhr, Henning Galinski, Orane Guillaume-Gentil, Georgios Sotiriou, Haifeng Sun and Joanna Wong, presented their PhD projects in a very convincing way. We thank all the finalists for their presentations and congratulate the winner, Orane Guillaume-Gentil!

The following industry apéro, an excellent opportunity to network with a selection of companies interested in materials scientists, included representatives from Dow, Phonak, Sika, Plansee, 3M and Biotronik. Later on, the day was brought to a close by a common dinner.

We would like to thank all sponsors Phonak, Sika, Plansee, 3M and Biotronik, for their generous support of the symposium and all the participants for their contributions!
